Police hand cash-for-honours file to CPS

Police have completed their investigation into the cash-for-honours affair and handed a prosecution file to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The Metropolitan Police said that the report was 216 pages with supportive material. A statement released by the Met said: "The Met has had extensive consultation with the CPS during the enquiry and provided them with reports together with over 6,300 documents. To date 136 people have been interviewed as either witnesses or suspects.

"It is now a matter for the CPS to consider the evidence, advise us on whether any further enquiries are necessary and whether any charges should be brought."

The cash-for-honours investigation was sparked last year by complaints from Scottish National Party MP Angus MacNeil and Plaid Cymru parliamentary leader Elfyn Llwyd who claimed that peerages were being awarded to those who made large donations or loans to the Labour party.

It then emerged that a number of loans had been made to the party before the 2005 general election and that some of those responsible had later been nominated for peerages.

The investigation was later widened to cover the other main political parties. A number of people have been questioned in the course of the investigation, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, Labour's chief fundraiser Lord Levy, Downing Street aide Ruth Turner and former Conservative leader Michael Howard.

All those questioned have denied any wrongdoing.
