Insolvencies hit new record
The latest statistics have revealed that there were 30,075 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the first quarter of 2007 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
An increase of 1.2% on the previous quarter and an increase of 23.9% on the same period a year ago, this represents a new record.
This was made up of 16,842 bankruptcies, a decrease of 1.3% on the previous quarter and an increase of 10% on the corresponding quarter of the previous year, and 13,233 Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs), an increase of 4.7% on the previous quarter and an increase of 47.6% on the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
In Scotland there were 3,471 individual insolvencies a 11% increase. Northern Ireland recorded 343 IVAs which represented an almost 16% decrease.

UK Emerges From Recession
The British economy has officially moved out of recession. Growth during the last three months of 2009 was recorded at 0.1%, a much smaller than predicted trajectory. The economy had shrunk for six continuous quarters, the deepest dip in over 50 years.

BP reports profit increase
BP profits have announced a rise in profit in their first quarter report for the company's new trading year. The oil company confirmed that its first quarter replacement cost profit was £5,491 million, an increase of 29% from the same period in 2004.

Regional imports suffer £1bn slump
Government figures released today have revealed that the value of regional imports has slumped by around £1 billion over the past quarter. According the Customs and Excise report, estimates for the fourth quarter 2002 saw regional imports dip £1 billion, or 2%, on the third quarter's figures to £51.4 billion.

UK Unemployment Drops In Three Months To February
Unemployment in the UK has fallen by 76,000 in the three months to February, down 1.3% on the same period in 2014, new figures from the Office for National Statistics(ONS) have revealed. UK unemployment now stands at 1.84 million, or 5.6%, which the ONS said is in line with forecasts.

Poundland could open over 1,000 stores in the UK as it has seen a steady rise in profits. The firm's profits increased 15% in the year to March. The discount chain, which currently has 458 stores across the UK, recorded total sales of £880m for the year to March, with the store now considering expansion.
