Two British Soldiers Killed In Iraq
Two British soldiers have been killed in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The soldiers, from 1st Battalion The Irish Guards, were killed when an improvised explosive device detonated next to their patrol in Basra just after midnight local time.
The soldiers were travelling in a convoy to the north of the Rumaylah oilfields, which are to the west of Basra City.
Two other soldiers were also seriously injured in the blast.
The MoD said that their families had been informed and that further information would be released after a 24-hour grace period.
The MoD has also confirmed the name of a soldier killed in Basra on Tuesday.
Leading Aircraftman Martin Beard, 20, from No 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment sustained a gunshot wound as he took part in a routine foot patrol in the Al Waki district north of the British base at Basra Air Station.
LAC Beard, who was from Rainworth, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, leaves a family and fiancee.
His commanding officer, Squadron Leader Jason Sutton, described LAC Beard as a "strong, fit and exceptionally gifted infantryman". He said: "He had such a bright future and had already set his sights on selection for special forces. I have no doubt whatsoever he would have succeeded in that as he did in all else. He was due to marry upon his return from Iraq and we all feel so deeply for his fiancee, Nic."
