British Holidaymaker Dies From Legionnaires' Disease

A British tourist has died after contracting Legionnaires' Disease during a coach trip to Italy.

The man was one of two people who reported feeling ill last Thursday, Health Protection Scotland confirmed. Two other suspected cases have since come to light and are being investigated.

Forty-one holidaymakers were on a bus tour organised by Caledonian Travel - a subsidiary of WA Shearings - and they returned to various parts of Scotland at the end of August.

The passengers and coach driver are being kept under close medical inspection, HPS confirmed. They also said that the company was co-operating fully with the investigation.

HPS said that a contaminated shower or whirlpool could be the cause of the infection.

Consultant epidemiologist Dr Jim McMenamin, who is investigating the outbreak, said that the tourists had been back in Scotland for ten days now and said that anyone who was likely to develop symptoms would have done so by now, as ten days was the upper limit of the incubation period for the infection.

Legionnaires' Disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia, which is caused by the bacterium legionella pneumophila, which can be found in water systems such as showers and spas.
