Killer Nurse's Appeal Fails
Killer nurse Beverly Allitt's High Court bid to have her minimum jail term reduced has been rejected.
Mr Justice Stanley Burton said that Allitt should serve a minimum sentence of 30 years, less the one year and 190 days that she spend in custody before she was sentenced.
Allitt, who was dubbed the 'Angel of Death', was jailed in 1993 for the murder of four children, the attempted murder of a further three children and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to another six. The term set by Mr Justice Burton is the same that was recommended by the trial judge and the then Lord Chief Justice.
Allitt carried out the attacks in the paediatric ward of the Grantham and Kesteven General Hospital between February and April 1991.
She is being held at Rampton High Security Hospital in Nottinghamshire.
The children who were murdered were: seven-week-old Liam Taylor, 11-year-old Timothy Hardwick, two-month-old Becky Phillips and 15-month-old Claire Peck.
Parents of some Allitt's victims were in court to hear the ruling on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, David Peck, father of Claire, said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the outcome - and pleased for the other families as well.
"We can now put this behind us after 15 years. I couldn't ask for anything better."
