Murder Confession Found In Dead Pensioner's Home
A letter confessing to the murder of a 19-year-old girl in 1970 has been found in the Wigan home of an elderly man who died recently.
The letter, which details the death of Lorraine Jacobs, was found in the home of 78-year-old Harvey Richardson in Aspull. He had been suffering from cancer and had died in a hospice in Wigan on February 9.
Miss Jacobs was last seen alive, walking home alone in Liverpool on September 1, 1970. Her body was found in a back alley, behind a building in Rodney Street, by binmen the next day.
The details of her murder were found written on nine pages of A5 paper by decorators at Mr Richardson's home. It is understood that they also found a gun, believed to be an airgun, an item of clothing and newspaper cuttings about the killing.
The letter is being examined by forensic and handwriting experts.
Detective Superintendent Ian Kemble told reporters: "The confession isn't dated, it's not signed, so how do we know he wrote it? Well, we don't know that until we have expert evidence."
Mr Kemble also said that the letter appeared to be quite old and had yellow staining and he said that he did not believe that he had been written within the last five or six years.
According to reports, a clipping relating to another unsolved murder - that of 18-year-old Jackie Ansell-Lamb, whose body was found in Mere in Cheshire, after she disappeared while hitchhiking in 1970 - was also found in Mr Richardson's home. However, Mr Kemble denied a report that there was evidence to link Mr Richardson to that killing.
The results of DNA tests found on items in the house are expected in about five weeks.
