Investigation Into Stabbed Dad's Phone Call
An investigation has been launched into a phone call made to police by a man who was later fatally stabbed while trying to stop a fight in a Lancashire park,
Father-of-five Mohammed Shafiq, 50, from York Street in Nelson was hit on the head with an iron bar and stabbed in the abdomen as he tried to intervene in a fight in Thompson Park in Burnley on Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he died later that day.
It is understood that Mr Shafiq had phoned Lancashire Police before heading to the park himself. The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
A statement issued by Lancashire Police said: "Lancashire Constabulary can confirm that a phone call was received from Mr Shafiq during the afternoon of Tuesday, March 4.
"A review of that call and our response to it has caused us some concern and we have referred that element of the investigation to the IPCC.
Police are investigating whether the stabbing of Mr Shafiq was related to an alleged attack on his teenage son five months ago.
A family friend told reporters that Mr Shafiq had received a call from his son saying that a gang of youths were bullying him. The man said that Mr Shafiq had phoned the police, before making his own way over to see his son.
It is believed that there were between 30 to 50 people at the scene of the disturbance where Mr Shafiq was stabbed, with around ten people involved in the fight.
Four people, aged between 16 and 20, have been arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 17-year-old boy has also been arrested on a violent disorder charge.
The attack is not being treated as racially motivated.
A boating lake has been drained in the area where the stabbing took place, in an attempt to find the weapons used in the attack.
A grassy, flat bank next to the lake has also been cordoned off and forensic teams were at the scene on Wednesday night.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on: 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
