Men Charged Under Terrorism Act
Two men have been charged under the Terrorism Act after being arrested at Heathrow airport.
Mohammed Abushamma, 20 and Qasim Abukar, 20, both from north London will appear before the City of Westminister Magistrates' Court in Central London today.
It is reported that the men were arrested after disembarking an inbound flight to Heathrow on Tuesday morning.
It is alleged that the men planned terror attacks overseas.
In other news, the Telegraph has reported that police chiefs have asked for more time to hold suspects without charge.
Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner said: "We have reached a point where at 28 days - we feel sooner or later, and maybe sooner - something is going to happen to make that insufficient."
Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick, Scotland Yard's new head of anti-terrorism said that police had intercepted 15 terrorist plots since the London bombings in 2005.
However, Lord Peter Goldsmith, the former Attorney General, opposes the plan to extend the detention time without charge. He told a Counter-Terrorism Bill Standing Committee "the case has not been made out for that extension and I can't personally support it".
Lord Goldsmith added that extreme Muslims could see it as an added incentive to become terrorists.
The Terrorism Act 2006 came into force in April. The law was drawn up in the aftermath of the 7 July bomb attacks in London and is intended to make the recruitment of would-be terrorists difficult.
