Blaze At Former Nursing Home
An investigation is to be been launched into a blaze at a former nursing home.
Fire crews from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the fire at Gainsborough House, St Georges Road, Abergele, following an emergency call at 4.40pm that the roof was "well alight".
The building was to be converted into flats.
A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Nine tenders in all and around 50 firefighters attended from stations all across North Wales. The aerial ladder platform was brought to the scene from Llandudno.
"The fire has caused considerable damage to the empty building which was in the process of being converted into flats. It took firefighters around two and a half hours to bring the fire at the three floored building under control."
Once the building has been deemed safe, an investigation will be launched into the cause of the fire.
Kevin Roberts, the incident commander at the scene said: "We need to do more to ensure empty buildings are left completely secure.
"Insecure buildings present massive risks to us and to the other emergency services as the buildings generally attract trespassers who tend to drink and smoke inside.
"More often than not our firefighters are called to tackle fires which break out and this of course puts their safety and that of others at great risk when in essence it could so easily be avoided."
