Blaze At Converted Church In London

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of starting a blaze at a hostel and converted church in west London.

The fire broke out at the hostel in Shepherd's Bush Road just before 7am and spread to the roof of Shepherd's Bush Baptist Church.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 75 firefighters are currently fighting a fire at a hostel which has spread to a roof of a church on Shepherd's Bush Road, W6. Half of the first floor of the hostel and half of the roof of the church is alight."

Twelve people in total were evacutated including those from the hostel - which houses single homeless people of all ages.

The 36-year-old woman, of no fixed abode, is being held at a west London police station on suspicion of arson.

The Hammersmith and Fulham Council has opened a community hall at Bush Green Estate to offer temporary accommodation.

An ambulance has been sent to the scene but no patients have been treated so far.

A local worker told Sky News that the church is in "a very, very bad state".

"The roof has collapsed. It's like lava. The fire is just blazing out of the middle of the church," he said.

It is expected to take the fire service up to six hours to deal with the blaze.

The area has been cordoned off and motorists have been advised to avoid Shepherd's Bush.
