'Siege' Girl, 6, Freed

Police have safely recovered a six-year-old girl allegedly held hostage in a property in North Yorkshire.

Paul Eames, 32, who is said to have held the girl in a 'siege-like' situation at the house on Herdborough Road, Scarborough, (general view, pictured) since Monday night, was believed to be armed with knives.

He was arrested and led away by police moments after the young girl was freed by the officers, who had been surrounding the house for a full 39 hours.

Earlier, Mr Eames' parents, David and Margaret made an emotional appeal for their son to give himself up before "it gets worse" and promised "we'll sort it out".

Local press reports said that the standoff was sparked after Mr Eames had a row with his girlfriend and that he allegedly then barricaded himself and the young girl in a bedroom.

A Firearms Support Unit and Negotiators were called to assist with the incident and a paramedic team was also put on standby.

However, despite a large police presence, the Daily Mail reported a "relatively relaxed atmosphere" with some officers even eating fish and chips and chatting to locals

A local resident, who did not wish to be named said: "He seemed friendly enough when you spoke to him."
