UK Classes Among Largest In Developed World

Class sizes in the UK are amongst the largest in the developed world.

A study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) found there to be 24.5 students in British classrooms compared with the OECD average of 21.5 pupils.

The UK was ranked fourth for classroom size behind Japan, Korea and Turkey despite the fact that the UK spends more per primary school pupil than the OECD average.

At secondary school level however the UK spends less per pupil.

There are large differences between class room numbers in state and private schools; in state primary schools there are 13 more children per class.

Anastasia de Waal, head of family and education at think tank Civatas, said: "The government must finally commit to a proper class size reduction programme for infant classes if it wants to see real results.

"When the first years of primary school lay the foundations for pupils' future achievement, cutting corners rather than class size is a huge mistake."
