Rare Blonde Hedgehog Taken To Wildlife Centre

An extremely rare blonde hedgehog is being nursed back to health at a wildlife centre after being found weak and struggling in Gobowen, Shropshire.

The hedgehog, thought to be a few months old, was taken to the Stapeley Grange Centre in Cheshire where she will remain until she reaches a satisfactory weight.

The centre takes in around 600 hedgehogs a year, but a spokeswoman said they had never received a blonde one before.

Dr Andrew Kelly said: "They are extremely rare so it's a delight to have one in our care

"We've worked hard to get her back to a healthy weight and are thrilled she's responded so well."

When the hedgehog is well enough, it will be released into a specially selected garden.

Blonde hedgehogs' colouring is caused by a rare recessive gene. They are commonly found on Alderney in the Channel Islands.
