Three Soldiers' Bodies Flown Home

The bodies of three soldiers killed in Afghanistan are to arrive back at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire. The soldiers, members of the Gloucestershire-based 1 Rifles, were killed on Wednesday when a bomb struck their Land Rover in Helmand Province. They were named as Cpl Tom Gaden from Taunton, Somerset; Rifleman Jamie Gunn from Monmouth, Wales and L/Cpl Paul Upton from Cornwall. Seven deaths have been suffered by 1 Rifles in Afghanistan in two months.

Boy Stabbed In School Attack

A 14-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being stabbed while at school. Police were called to Ayr Academy in Ayrshire at about 9.15am on Monday after the pupil was seriously injured. He was taken to Ayr Hospital and transferred to Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital, where his condition was described as stable. Strathclyde Police said a 14-year-old had been arrested in connection with the incident and was expected to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court later today.

Men Detained After Aberdeen Drugs Raids

Twenty people have been arrested after about 150 police officers were involved in a series of drugs raids in Aberdeen. Operation Lochnagar is the largest of its kind ever carried out in the city. Grampian Police said the "large-scale, intelligence-led" operation was launched on Monday, with more than 25 warrants executed by "strike teams". Officers said money and controlled drugs - including heroin and crack cocaine - were seized as an initial result of the operation. A special court sitting has been arranged to handle the high number of expected arrests. The crackdown is targeting "street-level" dealers, police said.

£25m To Protect Precious Woodland

The fight against a deadly plant disease plaguing historic gardens, woodland and heathlands across England and Wales received a significant boost today as Environment Minister Jane Kennedy announced £25 million to help eradicate the disease. The new funding will support a five-year programme to manage and contain the risks of two plant diseases Phytophthora ramorum and Phytophthora kernoviae from spreading further, following a scientific review and stakeholder consultation. The new programme is a result of an external scientific peer review and a public consultation which concluded that more should be done to try to manage the impact of the disease.

Persimmon Reports £780m Pre-Tax Loss

Britain's second largest housebuilder Persimmon has reported a £780 million pre-tax loss for 2008, however the company has renegotiated the terms of its borrowing arrangements. The York based firm has secured an extra £322 million of finance until 31 March 2012, however the cost of its borrowing has increased from around 2.8% to 6.4%. Persimmon described it as "the most challenging period encountered in the housing market in recent history". The housbuilder admitted that it has been a difficult year but it has taken decisive steps to refocus the business accordingly. There will be no dividend payments made for 2008 or 2009.

66-Year-Old Fugitive Hands Himself Into Netherlands Police
A 66-year-old man from Essex, sentenced to 14 years in his absence for drug trafficking offences, has handed himself in to authorities in the Netherlands. James Tarrant, who featured in the multi-agency Operation Return appeal to track down suspected or convicted criminals on the run, is the second fugitive to walk into a police station this month.

A former police officer has been jailed for committing misconduct in public office over a period of more than 10 years. Simon Quinn, 43, of Horsham, West Sussex was arrested in April 2013, under Operation Elveden.

Former Police Officer Admits Selling Information
A former police officer has admitted to selling information to the newspaper The Sun. According to the BBC, 30-year-old James Bowes is now facing jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of misconduct in public office. Mr Bowes was a police sergeant on the Sussex Police neighbourhood policing team.
