Two Arrested Over Pc Hit-And-Run Death

Police investigating the death of an off-duty officer, who died in a hit-and-run crash in Manchester, have arrested two men.

Pc Mike Silcock, 30, was hit by a BMW 3 Series Coupe on Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey Stockport, Greater Manchester, on Friday night.

He was taken to Stepping Hill hospital with serious head injuries, but died a short time later.

Another man, 25, was also taken to Stepping Hill, but his injuries are not life threatening.

Two men, aged 19 and 24, were arrested by Greater Manchester Police.

They have been granted extra time to question a 29-year-old man who was arrested a few hours after the crash.

Chief Superintendent David Anthony, head of Greater Manchester Police's South Manchester division, said: "We are shocked and saddened by PC Silcock's death.

"Mike is described by his colleagues and friends as an officer whose ethos was to serve the public and assist his colleagues. He was considered as a committed team player.

"He was commended in May 2006 for his part in the arrest of a gang of youths following a lengthy foot chase and thoroughly pursued inquiries. His efforts led to the arrest of seven known offenders and the detection of numerous burglaries."

He continued: "In his application to the force, PC Silcock wrote: "The police service will offer me a career for life, which is interesting, challenging, varied and rewarding. I genuinely would like to serve the community and work towards improving the often difficult circumstances in which people find themselves.'

"From everything that I have been told, his service with us was spent doing exactly that."
