Man Dies After Chemical Exposure
A man has died and four police officers are being treated in hospital following a contamination incident on the edge of the Borders region.
Officers were called to a lay-by at Cocklawburn Beach, near Berwick-upon-Tweed just before 8pm yesterday where a seriously ill man was discovered.
A metal container in the man's car, which appeared to be discharging a noxious substance, was described by police as an industrial chemical.
The man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but died on the A1 en route to the hospital.
Part of the road was then closed overnight to decontaminate the area.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Northumbria Police and Lothian and Borders Police are continuing to work together on this incident.
"The risk of contamination is limited to direct exposure and there is no risk to members of the public.
"Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the deceased man."
Four officers were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary hospital for observation following the incident.
