Device Discovered At Council Office
A Council office building is currently sealed off following the discovery of an explosive device on the steps of the building. An Army disposal team was called to Doncaster Council's offices at Concorde House after the suspicious device was found at the back of the building at around 2am. South Yorkshire Police said officers cordoned off the area after finding an "improvised explosive device" which was "intended to cause damage".
Restaurant Damaged In Blaze
A Caithness restaurant has been badly damaged in a fire. Fire crews, ambulance and police were called to the Taj Mahal in Castletown, near Thurso, after reports of a blast, which showered glass on the street. No one was injured, however a nearby house was evacuated while the street was cordoned off due to concerns about an adjacent petrol station.
11 Foreign Ships Under Detention In The UK During March
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced today that 11 foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during February 2009 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. Latest monthly figures show that there were six new detentions of foreign flagged ships in UK ports during March 2009 and five vessels under detention from previous months. The overall rate of detentions compared with inspections carried out over the last twelve months was 3.97% this is slightly down from Februarys' 12-month rate. During the month of March 121 Port State Control inspections were carried out in the UK. A total of 33 vessels had no deficiencies raised against them, 64 had between one and five deficiencies 16 had between six and ten deficiencies seven had between 11 and 20 deficiencies and there were no vessels inspected that had more than 20 deficiencies.
Woman Dies After Being Hit By Van
An elderly woman has died after she was hit by a delivery van reversing in the grounds of an Edinburgh hospital. The 77-year-old from Penicuik was badly injured in the accident at about 1410 BST on Tuesday at the Western General. She was taken to the hospital resuscitation unit, but staff were unable to save her. The 22-year-old van driver was uninjured.
Two Arrested In Care Homes Investigation
Two people have been arrested after concerns were raised about the welfare of residents at privately-run care homes in Essex. Police searched nine properties in Colchester on Tuesday morning. The homes in Cowdray Avenue and Harwich Road accommodate people with mental health problems. Essex Police are now liaising with social services and are questioning a 56-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man in connection with the operation. Essex County Council, which is responsible for social care in the county, said it was helping police with the inquiry.

Major Police Hunt Launched After Boy Taken From Hospital
A major police hunt has begun after a five-year-old boy with a brain tumour, was taken by his family without consent from Southampton General Hospital. Police said that Ashya King was taken from the hospital by Brett King, 51, and Naghemeh King, 45, on Thursday. It is thought he may have been taken to France.

Kent Police, in partnership with officers from the Metropolitan Police Service, have arrested two men in East London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. On 3 May, Kent Police began a search for Michael Wheatley, 55, who had failed to return to HMP Standford Hill after being released on temporary licence.
