200 Evacuated In Blackpool Blaze

Almost 200 people have been evacuated from their homes following a massive blaze in a residential area in Blackpool.

Fire crews were called to the fire, which destroyed an unfinished block of flats in Talbot Road. Around 70 firefighters fought to keep the blaze under control.

Hundreds of residents, none of whom were injured, were initially taken to St Thomas's Church on Devonshire Road, before staff from Blackpool Council moved them to Blackpool Sports Centre in Stanley Park.

The timber frame went up in flames at around 4.35am, and some of the residential properties that surrounded it were damaged as a result of the fire.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The unfinished construction was situated in the middle of a highly populated residential area.

"For everyone's safety we evacuated the area.

"An investigation is under way."
