Police Appeal After Fatal Collision
Police are appealing for information after a fatal road traffic collision occurred at approximately 4pm on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road, half a mile south of the Conoco Roundabout on Thursday.Two vehicles, a car and a lorry collided. The driver of the car died as a result of the collision. The road is closed between the Conoco Roundabout and Gilwern. If anyone has information about the collision they are asked to call Gwent Police Collision Investigation Unit on 01633 642404.
Junior Doctor Working Directive Review
A review into the quality of training for junior doctors, in the light of the implementation of the European Working Time Directive, was announced by Health Secretary Alan Johnson today. The review will consider the concerns raised by some professionals that the introduction of a 48-hour working week may have a detrimental effect on junior doctors' training, particularly on the training they receive while at work. The Health Secretary has asked Medical Education England (MEE), the independent advisory board on medical training, to commission the Post-graduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB), the independent regulator of standards of training, to work with stakeholders to identify areas where changes to training might be necessary as a consequence of reduced working reduced hours.
NHS Cancer Drug Campaign Grandmother Dies
A woman from Greater Manchester who fought for the NHS to pay for her kidney cancer drugs has died. Jean Murphy, 63, lost a High Court battle last year over Salford Primary Care Trust's (PCT) decision not to pay for the drug Sutent. She received an anonymous donation to obtain the medication privately, which shrunk the tumour by half and prompted the PCT to pay for the treatment. Professor Robert Hawkins from Christies Hospital confirmed she had died. Mr Hawkins had been treating Mrs Murphy at the Withington hospital. The drug Sutent, which costs about £3,500 a month, has not been made widely available to the NHS yet.
Motorist Dies After Crash
A motorist has died after a collision involving a car and a lorry in south Wales. Police are asking for information on the crash which occurred at around 4pm on the A465 near Gilwern, Abergavenny, Gwent. Five fire crews were called to the scene of the collision.
Woodhouse Residents Get Help To Combat Burglary
A major project to install free security measures in homes in one Leeds neighbourhood has got underway this week. Funded by the city’s community safety partnership Safer Leeds, the initiative is targeting the Elthams area of Woodhouse. Uniformed officers from the North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team together with representatives from crime prevention charity Community Action and Support Against Crime (CASAC) are visiting every home, in the area bordered by Woodhouse Street, Melville Road and Craven Road, to conduct security assessments. Additional security measures, such as door and window locks, will then be fitted for free by CASAC staff where required.

One killed in helicopter collision
One person has been killed after two RAF helicopters collided in mid-air, it has been reported. According to reports, at least two other people have been injured in the crash, which took place near Market Drayton in Shropshire, just before 3pm on Wednesday. The helicopters involved are believed to be Squirrel training helicopters from RAF Shawbury.

Fire At Police Firearms Training Centre
Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire, at the new police firearms training centre site at Valley Road, Portishead. Avon Fire and Rescue Service crews arrived on the scene just after 4.30am on tuesday (27 August) where they found a well-developed fire affecting the building, which is currently under construction.

Man released on bail over 'terrorist manual'
A man accused of possessing an al-Qaeda training manual has been released on bail after appearing before City of Westminster Magistrates' Court. Khalid Khaliq, 34, from Beeston in Leeds was arrested in May 9 along with three other people, including the widow of one of the bombers.

Police have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident in County Durham on Sunday morning. A 59-year-old woman is in a critical condition following the three-car collision, which happened on the A19 at about 10:30.
