Gems Expert Dies In Kenyan Mob Attack
A leading British gems expert has reportedly been killed in an attack by an armed gang in Kenya.
Campbell Bridges, 71, is understood to have been attacked by a group of around 20 men, armed with clubs and spears, as he was driving his pick-up truck to his mine, close to Tsavo National Park.
Mr Bridges was travelling with his son, Bruce, and four Kenyan employees when the attack happened.
Eyewitness reports indicated that Mr Bridges had been stabbed.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of Campbell Bridges on August 11, following injuries sustained in an attack near Voi in Kenya.
"British consular officials are liaising with the local authorities who have confirmed that an investigation is under way."
Mr Bridges, originally from Scotland, has lived in Kenya for most of his life and is credited with discovering the green Tsavorite gemstone, which he has been mining in Kenya since the early 1970s.
Mr Bridges was also a special consultant to New York's luxury jewellery company, Tiffany and Co.

Four Britons Killed In Kenya Supermarket Attack
The Foreign Office has confirmed that four British nationals have been killed by militants in Kenya. Up to 62 people are believed to have been killed in an attack on a shopping centre on Saturday. The four British victims have not yet been named but it is understood that the victims families have been informed.

Men jailed for British couple's murder
Two Venezuelan men have been jailed for a total of 96 years for the kidnap and murder of a British couple in Spain. Jorge Real Sierra, 56, and his brother-in-law Juan Antonio Velazquez, 40, were found guilty of the murder of Anthony and Linda O'Malley, from Llangollen, north Wales, at a court in Alicante, Spain.

Suicide bombers attack troops in Afghanistan
Two NATO soldiers and several Afghans have been killed following suicide bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of Defence. Several British soldiers and civilians have reportedly been injured when a bomber threw himself at a NATO vehicle close to the governor's compound, in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province.
