Body Found In Search For Missing Schoolgirl

A body, believed to be that of a schoolgirl who disappeared while swimming on a beach in Clacton, Essex, has been recovered.

Stella Akanbi, from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, got into trouble while swimming with a friend on Sunday afternoon, during a day-trip to Clacton with the friend and her parents.

A man in a dinghy was able to rescue one of the girls, but not the other, and a search, involving the local Coastguard rescue team, an inshore lifeboat, an RAF helicopter and a police helicopter, was launched.

A statement issued by Essex Police on Monday said: "Police can now confirm that the Essex Police helicopter spotted the body of a child in the water off Clacton at 3.45pm and the RNLI lifeboat has recovered the body.

"Formal identification is still to take place, but police believe it is that of 10-year-old Stella Akanbi, from the Milton Keynes area, who got into difficulty in the sea on Sunday afternoon.

"Her family have been informed and are being supported by police liaison officers.

"An investigation will take place into the circumstances surrounding her death.

"The coroner will be informed and an inquest will take place in due course."
