Paedophile Caught While On Bail

A 48-year-old paedophile attempted to persuade a 14-year-old girl to his house for sex whilst he was on court bail for on-line grooming.

Ian Price initially came to police attention after a proactive covert Internet investigation by the Metropolitan Police Paedophile Unit.

On 8 May 2008 Price began chatting online to a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl. In fact the "girl" was an undercover police officer.

He told her that he was 32-years-old and the conversations and text messages over the course of three months became increasingly sexually explicit.

He described how he would like to have sex with her, tried to encourage her to come to his home to have sex with him and sent her indecent images of him.

Price was arrested on 29 July 2008 date at his home in Canvey Island, Essex.

He was charged with three offences and appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on 31 July where, despite police objections, he was granted conditional bail.

Whilst on bail in September 2008 Price began texting and calling a 14-year-old in Essex that he came into contact with. She told him her age from the outset but he told her he was 21, then later saying he was 38.

He attempted to persuade her to stay at his house overnight so that he could have sex with her. He also told her he wanted anal sex with her and that he had bought a sex toy for her.

The 14-year-old and her family reported him to Essex police. He was arrested by Essex Police on 30 October 2008 and searches of his house uncovered the sex toy he had mentioned to her.

The Essex investigation was taken over by the MPS so that both cases could be prosecuted together by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Price was charged with inciting a child to engage in sexual activity for the Essex offences and had his bail revoked.

He pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court on 6 July 2009 for the original three online offences and pleaded not guilty for the Essex offence. He was found guilty of this offence on 13 July.

Ian Price was sentenced to imprisonment for public protection with an indeterminate sentence for attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual, atttempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity (Essex offence).

DI Dave Manning, from the MPS Paedophile Unit, said: "This case is unusual because despite awaiting trial, Price was so uninhibited that he made a desperate and worrying last minute attempt to groom a teenage girl and encourage her to meet him for sex whilst on court bail.

"This indicates how dangerous a man he is and the extraordinary lengths he will go to. Today's sentencing is the result of strong joint working between the Met and Essex police and has resulted in the risk to children being substantially reduced now he is behind bars."
