'Daylight' Kidnappers Sought

The police have appealed for help in tracing a man who has been missing for more than six weeks after he was kidnapped in broad daylight.

Paul Brady, 44, from Rochdale, was snatched by a large group of men on Beaufort Road, Bacup, Lancashire, on August 1.

Police were called to the scene at 2.10pm, after the building site manager was ambushed alongside his friend David Collier while they worked on a housing development.

They have since failed to find Mr Brady and officers are asking for the public's help to locate him.

Mr Brady was driving a white Ford Connect van - registration number ML04 VCE - when he and Mr Collier, in a silver Mercedes, were boxed in by the captors.

Between eight and 10 men in balaclava masks, who arrived in a white Ford Galaxy (PF05 BXP) and a silver Citroen Berlingo took part in the attack, police said.

The kidnappers, who were all carrying weapons, assaulted Mr Brady before forcing him into one of their vehicles.

But the group failed to capture Mr Collier, 22, and he escaped before they fled the scene.

The victims' cars were stolen and later abandoned nearby at the Clough Bottom reservoir.

Detective Superintendent Neil Hunter said: "We are doing everything we can to secure his safe release but we need the community's help.

"This incident happened on a Saturday afternoon in broad daylight in a quiet rural area on the outskirts of Bacup and I am particularly keen to hear from anybody who may have seen the kidnap or who saw a group of vehicles matching the descriptions leaving the scene."

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man from Burnley has been charged with conspiracy to kidnap in connection with the incident.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Preston Crown Court on November 11.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Burnley police station on 0845 125 3545 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
