Funding Application Call

Stormont Junior Ministers Robin Newton and Gerry Kelly have called for applications to a £1m funding scheme for community and voluntary organisations working with or representing minority ethnic communities. Junior Minister Robin Newton (pictured) commented: "This funding is a practical response to the changing situation on the ground where our society has become more diverse. While we are determined to provide what leadership we can, we recognise it is at the local level work where real change takes place." The Minority Ethnic Development Fund is available for the 2010-11 financial year, ending on 31 March 2011. The application process will be open until the 25 January 2010.

Serious Assault On Child

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection a "very serious" assault allegation on a 15-month-old child. Police in Enniskillen are investigating after a girl was taken to hospital in Belfast. The Western Health Trust said it is assisting police with their inquiries.

'Crossing Driver' Spared Jail

Evident remorse spared a man who drove his car over a student on a pedestrian crossing a jail term this week. Even though he fractured the female student's skull, Ryan Shaw, from Co Down was handed a 240-hour community service order. Judge Tom Burgess told the 25-year-old at Belfast Crown Court that given his clear record and genuine remorse: "If he did not complete the Order.....I would send you to prison." Mr Shaw, from Swallow Close, Comber, was also banned from driving for three years after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily injury to Ciara Denvir by dangerous driving on August 15 2007.

Dungannon Investment

Northern Ireland Environment Minister Edwin Poots has just announced the approval of plans that will help regenerate the heart of Dungannon's town centre. The approved plans are for the construction of 12 new retail units, a kiosk, café and 84 apartments, and will see an investment of around £20million being injected into a neglected part of the town centre. Minister Poots said: "This welcome investment is expected to provide 65 construction jobs, and on completion, will secure approximately 150 permanent retail jobs. The proposed development at Anne Street also includes much needed housing in the town, which will be of a high quality sustainable design that is sympathetic to the architecture in the immediate vicinity."

Prison Director Tackles Equality

The Director of the Northern Prison, Robin Masefield has addressed the prestigious Diversity and Equality in Government Conference held in London. This event was supported by the Government Equalities Office, The Diversity and Quality Awards, the Cabinet Office and Civil Service World. Robin Masefield said yesterday: "The conference gives the Prison Service an opportunity to showcase the very positive work we have taken forward through 'Make a Difference', the NIPS Diversity Strategy. Our work in this important area was recognised with a gold award by assessors in the 'Opportunity Now', Benchmarking Survey. This is the largest survey on gender, equality, diversity and inclusion in the UK. The invitation to address the conference is further welcome recognition of our commitment and progress in this area," he said.

Leonard Joins DCAL Committee

Coleraine Councillor Billy Leonard - who will replace Francie Brolly as East Derry Sinn Féin MLA on resumption of the Assembly in January - will also take up Mr Brolly's position on the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee, (DCAL). Commenting on his impending introduction to the Assembly Councillor Billy Leonard said: "I am looking forward to taking up my new duties representing East Derry in the Assembly as a Sinn Féin MLA. I will endeavour to continue the sterling work carried out by Francie Brolly both at constituency level and in the Assembly."

Festive Posting Outlined

Royal Mail is reminding customers of delivery and collection and opening hours over the Christmas and New Year period. There will be a normal delivery with an earlier afternoon collection service from all postboxes on Christmas Eve, Thursday, 24 December and no deliveries or collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or on Monday 28 December. Normal service will resume on Tuesday, 29 December, but there will be no deliveries or collections on New Year's Day, Friday, 1 January. Normal service will resume on Saturday, 2 January. Main Post Office branches will close on Christmas Eve, Thursday, 24 December at 12.30pm. Post Office branches will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Monday, 28 December. Branches will reopen on Tuesday, 29 December. Branches will be closed on New Year’s Day, Friday, 1 January and return to normal business hours from Saturday, 2 January 2010.

Translink Release Festive Timetable
Translink has released its Christmas and New Year timetable for the festive season. Passengers are urged to ensure their travel arrangements are in place ahead of Christmas nights out, with a range of night movers buses and trains on offer. A range of reduced fares and value offers will also be available.

Dept Of Health: 'Get Boosted For Christmas'
All adults eligible for their booster are being encouraged to get the jab at one of the many vaccination clinics in operation this week. As of yesterday, all those aged over 18 who received their second dose at least three months ago, can now take up the opportunity to get boosted.

Roads Service Ready For Winter Weather
Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has confirmed that the Department's winter service team is prepared to tackle the current cold snap. Around 300 staff and 130 gritters are ready to salt main roads, while 12 snow blowers are available for deployment if necessary. To ensure a comprehensive winter service, the Department has allocated £3.
