Dancing On Ice Dangerous: PSNI

As a partial thaw arrived over costal areas of eastern NI, the PSNI have again warned people to stay off frozen waterways.

With further news reports of whole families 'enjoying' the makeshift ice rinks, police have again appealed for people not to venture out onto the frozen lakes and ponds.

TV coverage at the weekend saw scores of people on the ice, despite the deadly potential of falling through thinning ice.

A police spokesperson said people are "dicing with death" and if they did fall through the ice the chances of rescue were minimal.

While playing on the frozen surface may seem like a novelty, the risks shouldn't be underestimated," said the PSNI spokesperson.

The danger was graphically illustrated when a man died on Sunday after going onto a frozen river in England to rescue his dogs, when the ice gave way and he fell into the River Tees in Stockton.

The man, who was in his mid-50s, was attempting to reach the animals which had strayed on to the ice close to the town's Infinity Bridge, police said.

The coastguard, the Cleveland Police fire boat and a police helicopter were involved in a rescue operation.

Attempts were made to revive him at the scene but he was pronounced dead at Middlesbrough's James Cook Hospital.

Meanwhile, a number of schools are closed as Northern Ireland remains in the grip of severe winter weather - despite the morning mini-thaw.

Snow is continuing to affect parts of Northern Ireland on Monday, particularly on higher ground.

A thaw has begun in some parts but icy weather in many areas is continuing to make driving treacherous.
