Snow, Snow, Snow

Fresh snowfalls and further ice patches are expected throughout Monday with treacherous conditions expected to continue throughout Monday with heavy snowfall predicted in the afternoon. Last night, temperatures reached a low of -9.7 degrees Celsius, in Castlederg, with several centimetres more of snow in places. This afternoon, the latest snow is expected to begin to sweep in from the north west of NI, moving east towards Co Antrim in the afternoon, where this chilly scene was pictured at Carnmoney.

Horses Get Floral Designs

A flower arranging display at Ballyclare Rugby Club on Thursday 9th December (7.30pm, £5) is set to raise funds for the equine charity Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, with tea and buns included, it is billed as a fun fund-raiser for a worthy cause. Meanwhile, the Ballad Inn, Ballynure has organised a 60/70s 'Groovy Train' event this Friday, 10th December with ballot prizes and games to help raise money for the sanctuary after news that Crosskennan is receiving an overwhelming number of calls to help abandoned horses.

Tragic Soldier Buried

The RIR solider killed in Afghanistan on Remembrance Sunday has been buried in Co Londonderry on Saturday. Ranger Aaron McCormick, 22, from the village of Macosquin near Coleraine, was helping to detect roadside bombs in Helmand's Nad-e-Ali area when he died in an explosion. A colour party from the Royal British Legion formed a guard of honour as his funeral cortege travelled the short distance from his home to St Mary's Church of Ireland parish. His coffin was draped in the Union Jack with his regimental hat and belt on top.

Lurgan Hold-up

Two men, one of them armed with a shotgun, have robbed a shop in Lurgan. It happened shortly after 3pm on Sunday when the masked men entered the premises at Drumlin Drive and stole cash before escaping on foot.

Flash Harry Hits Back

A former Upper Bann General Election candidate quit the Ulster Unionist party in the run-up to the party's conference has benb strongly attacked from the conference platform on Saturday. UUP Chairman David Campbell dubbed him "Flash in the pan Harry" after he had failed to be selected as a candidate. But, Mr Hamilton - also known as Freddie Mercury tribute act Flash Harry - released his resignation statement and claimed: This was the manifestation of a once centrist party moving to a more traditional and isolationist position. An increase of support is not going to be found by abandoning the middle ground of disaffected, disillusioned and disappointed voters," he said: "The party is retreating to what it perceives to be safe ground, but that is not what people want.'

Hammer Horror

A man armed with a hammer has robbed an off-licence in west Belfast. It happened on the Ballygomartin Road shortly before 3pm on Sunday. The robber, who wore a scarf across his face, stole cigarettes and alcohol.

Motorists Warned To Take Care Following Heavy Snow Fall In NI
Motorists are being warned to take care on the roads following heavy snow fall in some areas of Northern Ireland. Temperatures plummeted to -1 degrees overnight leaving ice on the roads. A PSNI spokesperson said: "We don't need much snow and ice for our wee country to grind to a halt! "Leave extra time for your journey.

Heavy snow showers affect whole of NI
Heavy snow showers have affected many parts of Northern Ireland overnight and there is a Met Office severe weather warning in force. Snow depths ranged from one inch to six inches with many schools closing for the day because of the dangerous conditions.

Motorcyclist Dies In Co. Down Road Accident
A 24-year-old motorcyclist has been killed in a crash in Moneyslane, County Down. The road accident occurred on the Katesbridge Road on Sunday afternoon, close to Banbridge. The road has now reopened. The name of the man who died has not yet been released. Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.
