Little Donkey!

Belfast Zoo's keepers have been particularly busy caring for the some new additions to the zoo farm. An African pygmy goat, a miniature donkey and seven piglets were born at the farm within seven weeks and keepers also received a late Christmas present when Brooke the miniature donkey arrived on 29 December, in the early hours of the morning, making her the last animal to be born at Belfast zoo in 2010. Her parents Miss Ellie and Dylan welcomed their first foal in 2003 and have since had six foals in total.

Ballymena On Alert

Business owners in Co Antrim are being asked to check their properties this morning following several security alerts yesterday, police have said. Army explosives experts were called in to deal with three cases of suspicious objects in Co Antrim yesterday. One, at a GAA club on the Gortgole Road in Portglenone, was last night declared a hoax and a suspicious device was also found outside St Paul's primary school in Ahoghill. The object was discovered near the school on the Ballynafie Road in the Co Antrim village at around 2.30pm. Police urged business owners and residents around Ballymena to check their properties for suspicious objects.

High Rise Blaze

Around 60 firefighters were tasked to 16-storey Grainne House in the north Belfast's New Lodge yesterday morning to rescue six people trapped on the top floor. The injured suffered minor smoke inhalation but no one required hospital treatment after a total of 12 fire personnel wearing breathing apparatus carried out the rescue. The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and the police later said one man was arrested and was helping with their inquiries.

Dundonald Robber Slammed

The robbery of a pensioner in Dundonald by a person impersonating a water service employee has been slammed by local MLA Jonathan Bell. "Our thoughts are with the 79 year old pensioner traumatised after being the victim of a robbery at his Craiglieth Crescent home at 9pm on Friday night. The thief impersonating a water service employee checking water must be devoid of conscience to steal from an elderly pensioner it is sickening and repugnant in the extreme. I urge people to check the identity of those calling at their homes legitimate services will not be offended in any way," he said, noting that anyone has seen anything suspicious to contact the Police.

Coleraine Attacks 'Sectarian'

Police in Coleraine are investigating a sectarian motive as one line of inquiry after two petrol bombs were thrown in the Killyvalley Park area of Garvagh. The attack was reported shortly after 2am on Saturday. A car was substantially damaged by flames and a nearby house also sustained scorch damage.

Co-Op Robbed - Again!

The East Belfast Alliance Councillor Máire Hendron has condemned the second robbery in the space of a week which has happened at the Co-Op premises on the Cregagh Road. This is the same location as the robbery of the Post Office which happened last Tuesday: "I spoke with the manager of the store on Saturday afternoon and it would appear that the Post Office robbery was a well planned job. Of course it now means a lot of inconvenience for local residents who now have to travel to various parts of East Belfast for the services of the Post Office. On Friday night a man entered the supermarket posing as a customer and held the cashier at knife point and got away with a sum of money. These robberies must be roundly condemned and I hope that the PSNI can track down the thieves so they can be severely dealt with. The Post Office robbery appeared well prepared in advance and the fact that knives were carried demonstrated a chilling level of malice."
