Armed robbery in west Belfast
Detectives have appealed for information following an armed robbery in west Belfast.
The incident happened at an industrial estate in Kennedy Way, when a man armed with a gun, approached a postman and demanded that he handed over the registered mail.
The robber then made off with the red royal mail bag in a silver coloured Ford Mondeo car, which was being driven by another man.
The bag is understood to contain a large quantity of jewellery worth thousands of pounds, along with an undisclosed sum of money in new $20 bills.
The robber is described as being around 5' 7" in height, of stocky build and with short black hair, which is greying. He was wearing blue jeans and a top with red and orange colours on it, and a black scarf covering his face.
Police have warned banks, building societies and travel agents to be vigilant for the stolen American currency, and have asked for staff who may notice anything suspicious to contact their local police station.
Detectives have also appealed to anyone who is offered jewellery under dubious circumstances, to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 55 111.
