Minister condemns pipe bomb attacks
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has condemned the continuing spate of sectarian pipe bomb attacks.
The Minister’s call came after the most recent attack on a man and his 12-year-old daughter on Tuesday August 14.
Both suffered from shock after a pipe bomb was thrown at their home in north Belfast. Police believe the attack on the Catholic family was sectarian.
Sir Reg said: "There can be no justification for the recent upsurge in pipe bomb incidents throughout Northern Ireland. Such reckless behaviour achieves nothing except distress and destruction.
"I would strongly urge those involved in this mindless sectarian activity to stop immediately. Anyone with information should come forward to the police before innocent lives are lost. I appeal to all those with influence within our community to do all they can to avert tragedy by bringing these alarming attacks to an end.
"There is no excuse whatsoever for the use of violence. The only way that we will succeed in resolving our differences is through democracy and dialogue."
The device, which was thrown at the front of the house while the father and daughter were sitting in the living room, exploded in the garden of the house in Ingledale Park on the Crumlin Road and smashed windows in the house. (MB)
