Gunpoint Robbery Family Fear Returning Home

The police in Co Donegal are investigating after a businessman from Londonderry was left terrified after threats that his family would be killed during a robbery at their home.

This morning he revealed they had not stayed in the isolated house since the incident that saw three armed men hold Derry shop owner Kevin Doherty at gunpoint in his home in Bridgend at about 7.30pm on Sunday.

Mr Doherty, his wife and their 18-month-old daughter were held while the men searched the house.

"I was terrified, I did everything they told me to do and hoped it would end," he told BBC NI's Good Morning Ulster this morning.

"A pizza delivery man had just left, and then three men walked into the living room," said Mr Doherty.

"Two of them were masked and one had a hood up, and I saw two guns.

"They said, 'Right Kevin, come with us', and I heard them tell my wife and child to get down by the window.

"My daughter was looking up at them and pointing," he said, adding that the infant was also laughing at the 'funny' masked men.

Mr Doherty said the gunmen led him through the rooms in the house.

"Every room I went into, they told me to close my eyes, put my face against the walls, and put the gun to my head.

"Then they bunged me into the car with a lot of stock from the shops, and kept threatening to shoot me.

"They said if I told anybody they'd come back and shoot my wife and child.

"They took me in the van up the back roads behind the house, and I heard the sliding door of the van opening and closing, and then I thought they were going to shoot me.

"Then they let me go," he said.

"It was a terrifying ordeal. We haven't been back to the house now, my wife's too frightened," he revealed, adding that about £6,000 worth of cash and cigarettes were taken during the robbery.

The SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has condemned the robbery: "I am absolutely appalled at this incident, which must have been terrifying for the Doherty family. The thugs who perpetrated this crime entered a family home armed and threatened the lives of Mr Doherty's family, including his 18-month year old daughter, all for a sum of cash and goods.

"Those responsible have no respect for the community in Bridgend or for the peace of mind of that family and in particular the young child involved. I absolutely condemn this and I appeal to anyone with any information on this horrific crime to report it to the local Gardaí or PSNI immediatley."
