Families targeted in separate pipe bomb attacks
A Catholic family in Cloghmills have been the latest to be targeted in the long-running series of attacks involving the use of pipe bombs.
Eamonn and Maura Morrison and their two children were upstairs in bed when they were woken up at around 1.30am on Thursday 26 July, by an explosion in the hallway of their home in Strand Park. When the family came downstairs, they discovered a second device left on the windowsill which was later made safe by army technical experts.
While Mrs Morrison said she had “no idea” why the family were targeted, police are treating the attack as sectarian in nature, and have announced that joint police and army patrols are to be introduced into the area in an attempt to reassure residents following the attack.
Meanwhile a family of five in North Belfast has escaped injury in a pipe bomb attack in north Belfast, which happened early on Thursday 26 July.
The device was thrown through the living room window of the home on the Oldpark Road. While no one was injured in the attack, several family members had to be treated for shock.
