Ambassador To Condemn Michaela Crime Scene Pictures
The Irish ambassador to Mauritius will press for an urgent examination of the Michaela McAreavey murder case and protest against the publication of crime scene photographs.
Close-ups of Mrs McAreavey's neck injuries are visible in the photographs, which were published by a new newspaper, the Mauritian Sunday Times.
The 27-year-old teacher, from County Tyrone, was strangled to death while on honeymoon on the Indian Ocean island last year, and two men were found not guilty of her murder last week after an eight-week-long trial.
Tánaiste Eamon Gimore (the Irish deputy prime minister) said the publication of the photographs showed a "total lack of respect to both her memory and the feelings of her family who have already suffered so much".
He said the ambassador would protest to the authorities at the leaking of the images to local media, and then ask them to re-examine the case.
Mr Gilmore said: "I believe the Mauritian authorities have a responsibility to ensure that evidence did not come into the hands of the media. I'm very concerned that did happen."
The photographs were printed yesterday, sparking outrage.
Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the publication was an "outrageous abuse" and Mrs McAreavey's family called it "reprehensible", "repugnant" and "insensitive".
The Mauritian Sunday Times has no connection to any Irish or British newspaper.
