Mauritian Newspaper Director Arrested After Michaela Photographs

The editor of a Mauritian newspaper has been arrested after publishing photographs from the crime scene where Michaela McAreavey was found murdered.

Editor and director general Imran Hosany has been questioned by police and it is understood he has appeared in court on charges of assault following a scuffle with other members of the local media.

It comes after the Mauritian Sunday Times (no connection to UK or Irish newspapers) published twelve graphic photographs of the County Tyrone murder victim lying dead in her honeymoon suite.

An international outrage ensued, with senior Northern Irish, Republic of Ireland and Mauritian politicians uniting to condemn the action.

The family of Mrs McAreavey issued a statement urging the newspaper to apologise by telling the world how it had got access to the images.

Mr Hosany apologised yesterday, saying his motive was not sensationalism, rather "to recall that such a heinous crime remained unpunished" following the acquittal of two men who had been accused of the murder.

But he was arrested this morning and taken to the Line Barracks Police Headquarters, then to court.

An investigation is ongoing to find out how the photographs got into the possession of the media.

A police search of the Mauritian Sunday Times in Port Louis yielded some documents and computers.
