Villiers Replaces Paterson As NI Secretary

Owen Paterson has left the post of Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and will be replaced by former transport minister Theresa Villiers.

Ms Villiers, who is the Conservative MP for Chipping Barnet, comes to the position in the first cabinet reshuffle since the coalition government came to power in 2010.

Prior to being an MP, she has been an MEP, a barrister and a lecturer.

Ulster Unionist Party leader Mike Nesbitt welcomed the appointment.

He said: "In welcoming Theresa Villiers, I would like to pay tribute to Owen Paterson who was not only a hard-working Secretary of State but possibly the most diligent Shadow Secretary of State we have ever had. I hope his successor will show the same enthusiasm and commitment."

He took the opportunity to ask Ms Villiers to support attempts to devolve Corporation Tax powers to Northern Ireland.
