HSBC launches search for best new British business

HSBC this week begins its hunt for Britain's top new entrepreneurs with the launch of the HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards 2003.

Up to 400,000 people are expected to start their own business this year and the Start-Up Stars Awards is Britain's biggest search for businesses under two years old which can demonstrate the inspiration, determination and discipline to succeed.

The awards, now in their third year, are presented in association with the Daily Express and Sky News. The 10 finalists will share prizes worth £65,000, including £20,000 cash for the winner and £5,000 for the runner-up. Each finalist will also win consultancy services and software worth £4,000 from Croner Consulting and Intuit.

Nigel Griffiths, Minister for Small Businesses, who helped launch the HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards 2003, said: "It is my hope that people with the talent and commitment to succeed will continue to come forward to establish new and thriving businesses to ensure our future prosperity."

John Rendall, Head of business banking at HSBC Bank, said: "HSBC has a track record of providing support for people wishing to start-up their own business - in 2002 we helped more than 80,000 businesses start.

"Last year's Start-Up Stars entries were extremely high quality and we again look forward to highlighting fantastic examples of what can be achieved by the young businesses whose contribution is critical to the whole economy."

The closing date for entries is Friday 30 May 2003. Judging will take place in September to select the 10 finalists. The winner and runner-up will be announced before an audience of 250 business leaders at a VIP dinner on Thursday 2 October 2003 at London's Savoy Hotel.

Businesses can contact the awards organiser's office on 0870 902 3333.
