Retired Couple Died Of Cold

A Northern Ireland woman has been found dead along with a friend in a Dublin flat after dying from the cold.

The bodies of John Glennon, 67, and Debbie McEvoy ,63, were found together on the floor of Mr Glennon’s flat in a sheltered housing unit at Drumalee Court in Stoneybatter on Monday.

A post-mortem has revealed the pair had health problems and died of hypothermia.

It is understood Ms McEvoy was a former nurse originally from Newry in County Down.

The bodies were found on Monday after gardai were alerted by health board officials, who had been unable to make contact with the two.

When the officers arrived at the house, there was no heat on.

The initial prognosis was that the pair had been the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, but an investigation by Bord Gais ruled out that possibility.

It was later discovered that gas had not been connected to the flat for some time.

A forensic examination of the scene was also carried out by police and found nothing unusual.

Temperatures in Dublin had dropped to as low as minus 2.4C on Sunday morning.

Police will complete an investigation file for the Dublin City Coroner and an inquest will be held.
