Irish Cyclist Wins Gold

Martyn Irvine has won gold and silver at the World Track Championships.

The 27-year-old cyclist from Newtownards has become the first member of the Irish team to win a gold medal at the championships for 117 years.

He won the scratch race by accelerating into a clear break with 10 laps to go.

He won the silver medal in the individual pursuit.

Irvine is the first Irish male competitor to win a medal at the World Cycling Championships since Harry Reynolds took the one-mile amateur title in 1896.

"I can’t believe I did that," Irvine said. "I gave it everything in the individual pursuit and my legs felt absolutely hollow before the start of the scratch. I went with about 12 laps to go because I started to feel good but I could sense a shadow on my shoulder before the last two laps. I didn’t know if I could hold off Andreas Mueller, the Austrian guy."
