Life sentence for man who murdered uncle
A man has been sentenced to life in jail for stabbing his uncle to death despite allegations that he had been the victim of sexual abuse in the past.
Thomas Ian McQuade, 32 told Belfast Crown Court that he murdered 59-year-old Joseph McQuade at his home in Comber as an act of revenge because he had been sexually abused by his uncle.
McQuade, from Newtownards, Co Down, handed himself over to police following the stabbing in October 2001.
The uncle's body was found at his home on the Magherascouse Road near Comber. He had been stabbed several times.
Sentencing him on Monday, Mr Justice Higgins recommended McQuade serve a minimum of 11 years in jail.
Meanwhile, a Londonderry man has been remanded in custody charged with attempted murder.
Patrick James Smyth, 38, from Bracken Park in Galliagh, appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court on Monday in relation to an incident at the weekend in which one police officer was hit by a car and another suffered head injuries in the same incident.
Mr Smyth denies the charge.
