Church damaged in overnight fire
A Catholic church in Co Down has been damaged by an overnight fire.
Police believe the blaze, which damaged a confessional box in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Newcastle, was started deliberately.
Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus were forced to smash windows in the church in order to ventilate the building due to the build up of thick smoke.
The attack is the latest in a long line of attacks on the church.
Previously the parochial house been damaged by a petrol bomb and vandalised in graffiti.

Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a deliberate arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 17 November, 2023. Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 12:40am.

Arson Attack On 5G Mast In West Belfast
Detectives in Belfast are investigating a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in the Andersonstown Road area. The incident occurred around 9.55pm on Wednesday, November 13th. Detective Sergeant Faulkner confirmed that officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who successfully extinguished the blaze.

‘Suspicious’ fire at Downpatrick Baptist church
Detectives in County Down have launched an investigation into a fire at a Baptist church. Downpatrick Baptist Church was extensively damaged in the blaze that occurred at about 6pm on Saturday evening. The fire at the Church Street building has been described as “suspicious”.

Methodist Church Damaged In Arson Attack
Police have launched an investigation following a fire at a church in south Belfast. The attack happened at Cairnshill Methodist Church on the Ballylenaghan Road last Thursday night. A number of fires were started within the building and damage was caused in several rooms. A motive for the incident has yet to be established.
