Church hall damaged in fire

Police are investigating a fire that gutted a church hall in Newcastle, County Down.

The hall, belonging to the Our Lady of the Assumption Church, was severely damaged in the blaze which was spotted shortly after 4.30 am on Tuesday morning.

Police are treating the blaze as suspicious, but the cause of the fire was still being investigated this morning.

Parish priest Father Albert McNally said that the hall and other church property had been targeted on four previous occasions in recent months.

Forensic investigators were continuing to examine the scene of the latest fire today.

In a previous attack in May, there was an attempted arson attack and a number of windows were broken.

In Belfast a fire destroyed 10 cars in an Isaac Agnew showroom on Boucher Crescent.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined but the damage was estimated at around £250,000.
