PSNI Warns Against 'Distraction Callers'
The PSNI has released a statement asking the public to be aware of potential 'distraction burglars' and 'bogus callers', following a spate of recent reports.
Officers are particularly targeting residents in the C District area, which covers County Down, North Down, Ards and Castlereagh.
"The first thing to remember is NEVER to let a complete stranger into your home without being 100% certain of their identity," a statement from the PSNI said.
"Use your peep hole or security chain if you have these. If not, consider having them installed.
"Ask ALL callers for proof of ID. Inspect their credentials carefully and ensure the photo is theirs. Genuine callers will be glad to show you their identification and will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they.
"Do not feel pressured into just letting a caller in because it can feel awkward to ask questions. This is your home, if you have any doubt keep them out!"

The number to call if you see or hear anything suspicious with regard to callers at the door is 0845 600 8000, or 999 in an emergency.

As the evenings stretch out, a senior PSNI officer is urging householders to make sure they do all they can to protect their property. Chief Superintendent Simon Walls wants home and business owners to take the necessary precautions to secure their home and belongings against opportunistic burglars and to be on their guard for cold callers.

Police have urged older and more vulnerable people within the community to be vigilant and wary of possible rogue traders and bogus callers. A police spokesperson said that there have been a number of reports of "cold callers" in areas including Lisburn, Newry and South Belfast offering gardening work, tarmac services and products for sale.
