Number On Child Protection Register Drops

The number of children listed on the Child Protection Register in Northern Ireland fell by 2% over the year to 31 March 2014, according to the latest figures released by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

At 31 March this year, 1,914 children were listed on the Child Protection Register in Northern Ireland, indicating a drop over the year of 2% from 1,961.

Changes by Trust range from a decrease of 15% in the Belfast Trust to an increase of 12% in the Western Trust.

At 31 March 2014 the largest proportion of children were on the Register due to Neglect Only (30%). 74% of children on the Child Protection Register at 31 March 2014 had been on the Register for less than one year, with 2% of children on the Register for three years or longer.

Child Protection Referrals for the quarter ending 31 March 2014 were 9% lower than the previous quarter and 9% below the number of referrals for the same quarter in 2013.

51% of all referrals originated from within Social Services, 15% from the PSNI, 10% from School/Educational Welfare Officers, 4% from Relatives and 11% from 'Other' sources.

Man Extradited From US Over Historical Child Sex Abuse
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a series of indecent assaults on a child in the 1970s. Damien Desmond Anderson, originally from L'Derry, was extradited from the US to face justice. He was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against a female who was 11 years old at the time of the abuse.

Two Men Jailed For 18 years For Number Of Sexual Offences
Two men have been jailed for a total of 18 years at Laganside Crown Court for a number of offences including rape and indecent assault. Dennis Allen, aged 48, was sentenced to 14 years and will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.

NI electoral register published
The names of the 1,075,116 people who have secured their entitlement to vote in Northern Ireland, have today been published in the latest electoral register. The register, the result of over three months work during what was the final annual canvass, reveals a fall in the number of eligible voters.
