'Yellow' Wind And Rain Warnings For NI
A new 'yellow' weather warning for rain and wind has been issued by the UK Met Office, covering the whole of Northern Ireland.
Lasting 08:00 - 16:00, an area of gale and severe, gale force, south to southeasterly winds will move northwards across the west of the British mainland and the eastern counties of Northern Ireland during Thursday.
The Met Office said winds could reach 60 or 70 mph in places and warned the public of the risk of disruption to travel and damage to trees. Conditions will be made worse by heavy rainfall in some areas.
The Chief Forecaster said: "A small but active depression will move quickly northwards during Thursday, bringing a short-lived period of gales and severe gales. The region of strongest gusts will progress from the southwest of England during the morning, through areas adjoining the Irish Sea in the middle of the day, before clearing from western Scotland in the afternoon."
Further heavy rain is also likely across Northern Ireland during Thursday and into Friday. The rain is likely to be accompanied by gales during Thursday, with gusts of 60 mph in exposed parts of the east.
The Met Office has warned of a risk of flooding and said the warning could be raised to 'amber'.
