Four Men Arrested Over Burglaries

Four men, believed to be involved in a number of burglaries in the south Armagh and Newry area, have been arrested by police following a major operation.

On Monday morning (5 January), a green Range Rover was reported stolen from a house in Ballymacashen Road, Killinchy. The vehicle was later reported to police after a member of the public noted suspicious activity in the Drumaghadone Road area of Banbridge around 10pm last night.

Details of the vehicle were given to police in the area and it was spotted at around 11.10pm in Markethill.

It was later discovered that hairdressers in the town had been burgled.

The car was then spotted to be driving towards Keady and a checkpoint was set up in the Davis Street area. At around 1.06am on Tuesday (6 January), the Range Rover – with no lights on – approached the checkpoint and attempted to drive through. The vehicle was stung but continued on.

A search of the area then found the vehicle located on Market Street where it had been abandoned. Around this time officers were also informed of a burglary that had taken place at a Centra store in Keady.

A sum of cash was taken.

Police conducting enquiries were then informed of the theft of a silver Ford Focus from the Lake Road area of Keady. It was later observed in the Newry area around 2.48am.

Police in the districts were notified, and at 3.56am, a blue Peugeot 106 was stopped by officers in Mill Hill, Castlewellan. A sum of cash was discovered in the vehicle. Four men were arrested.

Three men, aged 23, were arrested on suspicion of burglary. A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and driving with excess speed.

A silver Ford Focus was found on fire in Castlewellan Forest Park a short time later.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Wright said: "This was a time consuming and resource intense operation which involved officers from across E District and into C District.

"All officers worked together to keep track of the vehicles used and also notified our colleagues in An Garda Siochanca when it became apparent that the car was crossing the border.

"Through shared communication and joined up working we have located and apprehended four suspects."
