Derry City Council concerned over thefts from cemetery
Derry City Council has today appealed to the public to assist with deterring youths from removing burial equipment from the City Cemetery.
The call was made after a number of items of timber sheeting and grass matting covers for newly opened graves were removed from the cemetery over the weekend.
A spokesperson for Derry City Council, said: "It is our understanding that youths from the area have taken these to prepare 'dens' outside the cemetery. These actions are a matter of concern for staff at the cemetery as it interferes with their preparations for new burial plots and raises health and safety issues.”
The materials have been removed from the cemetery during the past three nights and on each occasion Council staff has retrieved the majority of items from locations adjacent to the cemetery. It is understood that the items have been taken after the cemetery is closed to the public.
Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to contact 028 7136 2615.
