Pipe Bomb Found In East Belfast

A pipe bomb has been found in east Belfast overnight.

A suspicious object was reported to police in Island Street at around 1.40am on Thursday.

A security operation was launched and army bomb experts found declared it to be a viable bomb-type device.

No homes were evacuated during the alert and the operation ended shortly before 6am.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Couple escape injury in pipe bomb attack
A young couple have escaped injury in a pipe bomb attack in east Belfast early this morning. The incident occurred at around 2.20am when the couple were woken by a large explosion outside their house in Cheviot Avenue. The front window was blown in and parts of the device were also found in the garden and street.

Loyalists thought to be behind bomb attacks
Loyalists are believed to have been behind separate pipe bomb attacks at the homes of two prison officers in Co Down. Security forces confirmed that a pipe bomb was thrown at a house on the Holywood Road in east Belfast in the early hours of Saturday. A device was also found at a house on Bloomfield Avenue on Sunday.

Weekend Bomb Attacks Condemned
A spate of bomb attacks over the weekend has been condemned by the First and deputy First Minister and parties across the political spectrum. A police patrol was attacked with a pipe bomb in County Tyrone on Saturday. A security alert began in the Ballycolman estate, Strabane, at about 20:25, following news that something had been thrown at police.
