Masked Men Ransack Pensioner's Home 'Searching For Drugs'
A gang of masked men have ransacked a pensioner's home "searching for drugs" in north Belfast.
The burglary occurred in the Downview Mews area on Wednesday at around 7pm.
The men told the female resident, aged in her 70s, they were looking for drugs.
The men ransacked a bedroom and made off in the direction of Donegall Park Avenue.
After they left it was discovered that a sum of money had been stolen.
The men are described as being aged in their 20s or 30s, and were wearing jeans and dark clothing.
The woman was not injured during the incident.
Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly said: "Burglaries are a huge concern for everyone and particularly in the time approaching Christmas there seems to be an increase in these crimes.
"I would urge all residents to put in place sensible measures to reduce your chance of becoming a victim of such crimes.
"I would also point out that people shouldn’t become prisoners in their own homes but that by putting in place minor precautions it will make you safer in your home.
"There are many agencies and charities that will provide free advice on most efficient cost effective measures to secure your home.
"We will be raising the issue of burglaries with the PSNI to ensure an effective strategy is in place to tackle these crimes and bring those responsible before the courts."
