SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey To Retire

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey has announced he is to retire at the end of this year.

The Foyle MLA will also step down as SDLP Chief Whip.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood said: "Pat Ramsey represents everything that is good and decent about local politics. Over 30 years in politics and 20 more in community work, Pat has demonstrated himself to be an honest and dedicated public representative. 

"Pat's enormous work for people with disabilities, his efforts to improve life for those with diabetes and his unflinching dedication to helping the most vulnerable has made an indelible impact on the lives of so many. His legacy will live long in the memory of those he has helped in Derry an across the North.

"As the SDLP's parliamentary group whip, Pat has been at the heart of our business in the Assembly. Always firm but fair, his contribution has been immeasurable and will be deeply missed."

Man Injured In Paramilitary-Style Attack In West Belfast
A 39-year-old man has been injured in a paramilitary-style shooting in west Belfast. The victim was shot in both ankles in the Glenalina Gardens area just after 9.30pm on Tuesday, 30 January. He was taken to hospital to be treated. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Man Shot In West Belfast
A 25-year-old man has been shot in the leg in west Belfast. The attack happened at Westrock Parade at around 9pm on Monday. The man is being treated in hospital, however his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
