Police question Algerian man over suspected al Queda links

An Algerian man suspected of having links to the al Qaeda terror group is continuing to be questioned by detectives in Northern Ireland today.

The man, believed to be an illegal immigrant being held at Maghaberry Prison, was arrested on Monday and is being quizzed about serious crime and possessing material likely to be of use to terrorists.

A judge sitting in Craigavon Combined Court on Tuesday granted an extension of 72 hours to allow detectives further time to question the man.

Security sources indicate that the man is not connected with any terrorist group in Northern Ireland and PSNI Special Branch have been in touch with other police forces and intelligence services in the UK regarding the arrest.

It is understood that the arrest followed a period of surveillance by a multi-organisation team.
