'Shock and outrage' expressed over pensioner death
A Sinn Féin councillor has expressed his "shock and outrage" after a 73-year-old man died following the burglary of his home in Co Down at the weekend.
Ted O'Hare, 73, was found dead by his three brothers at their farmhouse on the Tullymore Road, in Loughbrickland on Saturday evening.
It is believed the brothers were confronted by five masked men as they returned home from mass at around 8pm.
The gang assaulted the men before ransacking the house and fleeing. It was then that the brother's found Mr O'Hare's body.
Newry Councillor Davy Hyland said: “There can be no doubt that the attack was the cause of this man’s death.
"It is the latest in a long line of such attacks. Over the weekend there were at least four of these vicious robberies in the six counties.
“Society needs to stand with our elderly at this time. We must make them feel safe in their own homes. We must ensure that they are valued and protected, not frightened and attacked.”
A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on Mr O'Hare's body.

Detectives in Belfast are investigating a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in the Andersonstown Road area. The incident occurred around 9.55pm on Wednesday, November 13th. Detective Sergeant Faulkner confirmed that officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who successfully extinguished the blaze.
